What is diabetes?

When our bodies digest food the pancreas produces insulin which coverts this food into glucose. Glucose is a simple sugar which gives us energy. When the body is unable to store and use food energy properly this is called diabetes.

When someone has  diabetes they have one of the following:

The pancreas does not produce insulin.

The pancreas produces an inadequate amount of insulin.

Cells do not respond to the insulin that is produced.

Types

Type 1 diabetes is caused by destruction of the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas.

Type 2 diabetes is a disorder resulting from the body's inability to produce insulin or use insulin properly.

Gestational diabetes develops and lasts throughout pregnancy.

  Complications of diabetes

Elevated blood sugar levels damage the small blood vessels that nourish the retina. This damage causes the blood vessels in the retina to leak or bleed, resulting in decreased vision or blindness.
