Over 70 years of service !

Melvin Jones, a businessman, dreamt of business clubs directing their efforts towards the betterment of their communities. His dream became a reality on June 7, 1917 when an organizational meeting was held as a result of his efforts. Today, there are over 1.4 million members throughout more than 180 countries. Volunteers made up of people like you .

That first smile . . . that first thank you . . . that first warm feeling that we made a difference keeps us going.

South Buffalo - Lackawanna Lions are proud to be part of that 1.4 million service organization.

We have been around 70 years helping your family, friends and neighbors.

This site will give you a little background on our club, whose who,  upcoming events and a bit more.

We hope that you will enjoy your visit . . . return again . . . and most of all . . . join us in Lionism.

Serving our community for over 70 years

I n 1929, businessmen in South Buffalo formed the South Buffalo Lions Club. The club expanded it's scope of service to include the city of Lackawanna. Today, we are fondly known as the South Buffalo - Lackawanna Lions in our community.

We have both male and female members with an age span that ranges from the thirties to the nineties.

The club meets twice a month where the majority of the club enjoys a dinner with each other prior to the meeting.

We begin the month with a casual business meeting and end it enjoying a speaker at our second meeting. Topics have ranged from other service organizations to local dignitaries.

What we do for the community

  Who is wise?

  He who can learn

from  every man.

We have a loan closet of wheelchairs, walkers, canes, etc. for those who cannot afford to purchase their own for a small refundable deposit.

We provide a Sight Conservation program for those who cannot afford eye exams and eyeglasses along with a Hearing Conservation program for those who cannot afford hearing aids.

We support youth activities in our four high schools (Mt. Mercy Academy, South Park High, Bishop Timon/St. Jude and Lackawanna High) through  community service and annually present cash awards to deserving students.

We always consider any request that comes our way from individuals in need or something for the good of the community.

Our blind in our community enjoy two special days a year with us. In August, we hold a picnic that entails great food, entertainment and games. In the fall, we host a  Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings.

Can you smell

that aroma?

How do we raise our funds?

Annually we hold a Spaghetti Dinner, Pancake Breakfast and a Night at the Races event with each member pitching in at each event. The club members are assigned a function from selling tickets at the door, greeting our guests, cleaning tables, flipping pancakes to running the projector. A good time is had by the members and guests in raising monies for each of our worthy causes that we sponsor, enabling us to shower our community with assistance in time of need.

The City of Lackawanna sponsors a "Come Home to Lackawanna" event each year where our club has a table under a tent with the aroma of fair food surrounding us as we sell our game of chance.

Whether it is sunny, rainy or cold, we hold our annual White Cane Drive. Our members sign up for shifts to collect monies in front of supermarkets, local banks and other establishments.

Each year the club has entertainment books that are available to the public allowing them discounts while helping their community.

Go to our Upcoming Events page to see the next event that we will be partaking in.
